Choose transliteration rules for the destination

Russian Cyrillic does not have one Latin spelling that fits every purpose. Readable messages, search-friendly page addresses, identity documents and reverse decoding use different mappings, so this tool keeps those tasks in separate modes while processing every character locally in the browser.

Readable text and custom letters

The readable mode preserves punctuation and capitalization while letting you choose variants for е, ё, ж, й, х, ц, щ, ъ, ы, ь, э, ю and я. Start with the human-friendly preset or apply the simplified GOST, Russian passport, U.S. State Department or international telegram mappings, then adjust individual letters when a recipient expects another convention.

URLs, documents and reverse conversion

SEO mode normalizes punctuation into a selected separator and can force lowercase for clean page slugs. Passport mode applies the table from Russian MVD Order No. 889 of 2017, but official spelling should still be verified with the issuing authority. Reverse mode recognizes common multi-letter sequences and produces an editable Cyrillic result; ambiguous source spellings may require correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the text uploaded to a server?

No. Transliteration runs in your browser, and the entered text is not uploaded by this tool.

Which mode should I use for a website URL?

Use SEO / URL mode. It lowercases text by default, removes unsupported punctuation and joins words with the separator you choose.

Can I use the passport result in an official application?

The mode follows the displayed 2017 Russian MVD table, but you should confirm the required spelling with the issuing authority and existing identity documents.

Why can reverse transliteration make mistakes?

Different writers use the same Latin letters for several Russian sounds. The tool recognizes common combinations, but context can remain ambiguous.
